The Annual Book Fair Returns to Perambalur After Four-Year Hiatus

After a four-year break, the annual book fair has returned to the district of Perambalur, providing over a lakh books through over 100 kiosks at the Perambalur municipal park. The 10-day book fair, which will run through April 3, was inaugurated on Saturday by Minister for Transport SS Sivasankar in the presence of Collector K Karpagam.

Due to various issues, including a lack of funding and the inability to hold the book fair for the last four years, members of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association and activists petitioned the Collectorate to reinstate it this year.

The state government's decision to host book fairs in all districts and the collector's efforts contributed to the drive to bring back the fair, which debuted in 2012 this year.

In partnership with Perambalur Makkal Panpattu Mandram, the district administration has invited many publishers, including the Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation and Integrated Child Development Services, to set up stalls. "We lodged a petition with the Collectorate on October 17, 2022, for the book fair," said K Kalairaja, an activist from Perambalur. We are relieved that it has returned. Perambalur finished first in the Class 12 board exams performance and second in the Class 10 boards last year.

The expo will assist students in obtaining the books they need to prepare for competitive examinations. As a result, the district administration should do it regularly."

"Normally, if we need a book, we travel to Tiruchy and get it," M Akshaya, a college student from Perambalur, said. Yet, a wide range of books is accessible during the book fair. Students' reading habits will improve as a result of the fair." Collector Karpagam responded, "Reading is an exercise for the spirit, just as physical activity is for the body." Reading can help to renew the mind. As a result, we are holding the book fair."
